On Jan 15, Search Engine Land shared a post highlighting multiple SEO tools noticing disrupted rank tracking. SimilarWeb, Rank Ranger, SE Ranking, and ZipTie.dev reported the issue.
However, as per the latest information, Google has updated its search functionality to require JavaScript for all users, including bots.
The change was made to improve security by better protecting against bots and spam, and providing accurate and up-to-date information to users. However, with this change, many SEO tools started finding it difficult to access and evaluate web content, potentially affecting their ability to provide accurate data insights.
JavaScript is a programming language that helps websites deliver dynamic and interactive content. So, why is enabling or disabling it a big concern?
JavaScript is Capable of Blocking Bots
Remember in my previous post, I highlighted how fake bots visiting your website can deliver inaccurate insights. Well! Businesses use various SEO tools to measure and strategize their website performance. Google is using JavaScript to block certain SEO tools to prevent misuse and ensure fair practices. Here’s Why:

Most SEO tools work by “reading” a website’s content directly from its code (HTML). This is easy when all the website’s content is visible in the HTML from the start.
However, some websites use JavaScript to show or load parts of the content dynamically (after the page is opened). In these cases:
Tools that don’t understand or “run” JavaScript won’t be able to see this extra content because it’s not immediately visible in the HTML.
It’s like trying to read a book where some pages only appear after pressing a button—but the tools don’t know how to press the button.
Google’s crawlers are smart and can “run” JavaScript, so they can see the full content. But simpler SEO tools can’t do this, so they miss out on important information.
So, Is it a Challenge for SEO tool providers or Businesses that rely on these tools?
This change poses challenges for both SEO tool providers and businesses that rely on these tools, but in different ways:
1. For Owners of SEO Tools
SEO tools that cannot execute or analyze JavaScript-rendered content (like older or less advanced tools) will struggle to provide accurate data. This affects tools that rely on static HTML scraping and lack the capabilities to process JavaScript.
Impact: Tool providers need to upgrade their technologies to handle JavaScript-based content effectively, which requires significant investment in development and resources.
Examples: Tools that fail to evolve may lose market share, as they won’t be able to deliver the insights businesses expect.
2. For General Businesses Using SEO Tools
Businesses that depend on SEO tools like Yoast SEO, RankMath, or Screaming Frog might face some limitations if these tools cannot fully interpret JavaScript-rendered content. However:
Yoast SEO and RankMath: These are primarily on-page SEO tools used for optimizing website content directly in WordPress or other platforms. They don’t crawl websites like bots but help optimize content for search engines. Since these tools work mostly within the site’s CMS, they are less likely to be affected by Google’s JavaScript changes.
Screaming Frog: This tool is more affected, as it is a crawling tool that helps businesses analyze their websites. It already supports JavaScript rendering, but users may need to ensure settings are properly configured to account for dynamic content.

- Advanced tools like Screaming Frog (when updated) or cloud-based solutions with JavaScript capabilities will remain effective but might require additional expertise or costs to use.
Businesses using advanced, updated tools and providers who innovate to handle JavaScript-based content will thrive. Those stuck with outdated methods may fall behind. It has also been reported that some SEO tools seem to be unaffected by Google’s change, such as Semrush, Monitorank, and Ahrefs.
